For architects intending to work in the UK, two pathways are available for securing endorsement from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) under the categories of Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise.

Application Process:

  • RIBA evaluates the application and communicates its decision back to the UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) authority.

Supporting Documentation:

In addition to the application, applicants must provide:

  • Three letters of support.
  • Up to ten individual pieces of evidence, distributed across at least two categories

  1. Exceptional Talent - Leader, with demonstrated and verifiable mastery characterized by a proven level of skills, expertise, contribution and proficiency:

  • Evidence of significant international media recognition, included recent features, articles, or reviews from national or international architectural publications or journals within the last five years and from at least one country other than the applicant's country of residence.

  • Proof of winning or playing a big role in winning a top architecture award for excellence in the last five years. This could be awards like the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, RIBA International Prize, Pritzker Prize, Venice Biennale of Architecture Award

  • Evidence of  demonstrated work in significant architectural events or publication by renowned publishers within the past five years. This may include features in books from well-known international publishers or participation in exhibitions at major events such as the Venice Biennale of Architecture. 

*The applicant must provide proof from at least one country other than their country of residence, with a minimum of two publications or exhibitions.

  1. Exceptional Promise -  A prospective leader with demonstrated leadership potential through their skills and accomplishments: 

  • Evidence of recent media recognition, either in the UK or internationally, should include features, articles, or reviews from newspapers, magazines, or broadcasting companies within the last five years. 

*Recognition can originate from the applicant's own country or from other countries, but it should not consist of event listings or advertisements.

  • Proof of recent recognition, included winning, being nominated, or contributing to winning an architectural award of excellence in the last five years. This could be at the national or international level in architecture, such as the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, RIBA International Prize, Pritzker Prize.

  • Proof of recent work being published or exhibited in internationally recognized architectural contexts, included work featured in books by well-known publishers or being part of exhibitions at major events like the Venice Biennale of Architecture. Evidence from one or more countries, including the applicant's own if applicable, must be provided, demonstrating at least two publications or exhibitions.

Processing Time:

  • Standard processing can take up to 8 weeks.

Post-Endorsement:

  • If endorsed, the applicant will receive an email with an endorsement letter from the home office, necessary for the visa application.
  • The applicant must apply for the visa within three months of receiving this endorsement.


If an endorsement is not granted, individuals have the following options:

  1. Endorsement Review:some text
    • Submit an Endorsement Review within 28 calendar days of receiving the decision.
    • This service is free of charge.
    • The Endorsement Review decision will be provided within 28 calendar days.

  1. New Application:some text
    • Submit a new application with different evidence.
    • Full application fee must be paid again.

  1. Alternative Visa Route:some text
    • Apply for entry through a different visa route.

Stage 2: Applying for the Visa

Application Steps:

  • Applying on the official Global Talent website within three months after receiving endorsement.
  • Submitting all required documents as listed on the government website.

*The Home Office will review immigration-related aspects and general grounds for refusal.

Processing Times:

  • It takes up to 4 weeks for processing if applying from outside the UK.
  • It can take up to 8 weeks for applications submitted within the UK.
