Why This Route

Why the Academia & Research route is different

The Global Talent Visa gives researchers, academics, scientists and engineers a flexible way to relocate to the UK on the strength of their work — without employer sponsorship. The route covers three application paths: standard peer-reviewed endorsement, a fast-track via an endorsed funder, and a fast-track via an eligible senior appointment. Tech Nomads helps you identify the right path, prepare your case, and move from endorsement to visa application with regulated support where required.

Work without sponsorship

No employer sponsorship needed for most routes.

Career flexibility

Hold research, teaching, fellowship or industry positions.

Bring your family

Eligible partners and children can apply as dependants.

Settlement route

Exceptional Talent: ILR after 3 years. Promise: usually 5 years.
Choose Your Path

Three application paths — which one fits you?

The Academia & Research route is the only Global Talent stream with multiple application paths. Choosing the right one materially changes your timeline, evidence requirements and approval probability.
1

Peer Review (standard)

Full evidence-based endorsement assessed by The Royal Society, British Academy or Royal Academy of Engineering. The most flexible path — open to a wide range of researchers.
5–8 weeks endorsement
Fast-track
2

Endorsed Funder

For holders of qualifying fellowships or research grants from approved funders (UKRI list — ERC, Wellcome, Marie Skłodowska-Curie and others). Significantly faster, lighter evidence.
Weeks, not months
Fast-track
3

Senior Appointment

For those appointed to qualifying senior academic or research positions at UK institutions, against a specific eligible-role list.
Weeks, not months
A Global Mobility Expert can talk through which path may be a commercial fit for your profile. The final route decision rests with the endorsing body and UKVI, not Tech Nomads.
Primary conversion

Start with a 30-minute academic assessment

Before any case preparation, a Global Mobility Expert talks through your research profile, fellowships, publications, citations and UK plans, then maps your profile against the three application paths. The final endorsement decision sits with the relevant endorsing body.

Who Decides

Approved endorsing bodies

Unlike the Digital Technology and Arts & Culture routes, the Academia & Research route uses four endorsing bodies, each covering a different area. Choosing the right body is the first strategic decision.

The British Academy

Humanities and social sciences — economics, history, languages, philosophy, archaeology, law and more.

How Tech Nomads helps

We help you identify the correct endorsing body for your discipline and profile, prepare the case to that body's expectations, and submit through the right path. We are not affiliated with any endorsing body; they independently review and decide the case.
Endorsement Logic

Endorsement criteria

For Peer Review applications, assessors review your case against three main areas. Fast-track routes require evidence of the qualifying fellowship or position rather than the full peer-review evidence package.
Criterion 1

Research excellence

The quality and impact of your research outputs.
Example evidence
Publications, citations, journal venues, conference presentations and patents where applicable.
Criterion 2

Recognition & awards

Evidence of standing and recognition in your field.
Example evidence
Fellowships, grants, prizes, invited talks, editorial roles, peer-review service and society leadership.
Criterion 3

Contribution to the field

Impact beyond your own research outputs.
Example evidence
Mentorship, training, public engagement, policy work, interdisciplinary work and research leadership.

The strongest applications connect every document to a criterion

Each piece of evidence should map to a specific criterion and explain why it proves leadership — or leadership potential — in your field.

After Endorsement

What we prepare
after endorsement

After endorsement, the case moves into the visa application stage. This is regulated UK immigration work, handled exclusively by Tech Nomads Limited, an IAA-regulated UK immigration firm. Everything before this stage is non-regulated commercial work.

Endorsement ≠ Visa

Being endorsed does not grant the visa. You must submit a separate visa application within 3 months of receiving your endorsement letter.

FAQ

Academia & Research
Visa  FAQs

Each answer cites GOV.UK or the relevant endorsing body as the source.

Which endorsing body should I apply to?

It depends on your field. The Royal Society covers natural sciences, mathematics and medical research. The British Academy covers humanities and social sciences. The Royal Academy of Engineering covers engineering. UKRI administers the fast-track paths across all disciplines.

What is the Endorsed Funder fast-track?

If you hold a qualifying fellowship or research grant from an approved funder on the UKRI list (such as ERC, Wellcome or Marie Skłodowska-Curie), you may apply through a faster path with a lighter evidence requirement than full peer review.

What is the Senior Appointment fast-track?

If you have been appointed to a qualifying senior academic or research position at a UK institution, against the eligible-role list, you may apply through a faster path that evidences the appointment rather than the full peer-review package.

Do I need to be at a UK institution to apply?

Not for the standard Peer Review path or the Endorsed Funder fast-track. The Senior Appointment fast-track is specifically for those appointed to qualifying senior roles at UK institutions.

How much does it cost?

The GOV.UK application fee is £766, split into £561 for endorsement and £205 for the visa. Applicants also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, usually £1,035 per year per person, paid upfront for the chosen visa duration. Tech Nomads service fees are separate.

Talent or Promise — which fits an early-career researcher?

Exceptional Promise is generally aimed at early-career researchers who can show strong potential to become leaders. Exceptional Talent is for established research leaders. The route affects the settlement timeline: usually 3 years for Talent and 5 years for Promise.

How long does the process take?

Peer Review endorsement decisions usually take 5 to 8 weeks; the fast-track paths can be considerably quicker. Visa decisions usually take around 3 weeks from outside the UK after identity checks and document submission.

What happens if endorsement is refused?

You may request an endorsement review. You can also consider strengthening your evidence and submitting a new application, depending on the refusal reasons and your timeline.
